Open Instagram Insights or Meta Business Suite and you'll see dozens of numbers. Some of them tell you something useful about your business. Many of them don't. Here's how we think about social media metrics, and the short list we actually report on each month.
Start with the goal
Before choosing social media KPIs, decide what social media is supposed to do for you. For most businesses it's one of three things: build awareness, build trust with people who already know you, or bring in leads and sales. Different goals need different numbers.
Metrics worth tracking
1. Reach
Reach is how many different people saw your content. It's the best simple measure of awareness. Impressions count every view, including repeat views by the same person, so they're always higher. When comparing reach vs impressions, reach is usually the more honest number.
2. Engagement rate
Engagement rate is interactions divided by reach. It tells you whether the people who saw your post cared. A post with 500 likes from 50,000 people reached is weaker than a post with 200 likes from 2,000. Compare posts by rate, not raw totals.
3. Saves and shares
These are the strongest signals. A save means "this is useful, I'll come back". A share means "someone else should see this". Both tell the platform to show your content to more people, and both suggest real value.
4. Profile actions
Profile visits, link clicks, website taps, call and WhatsApp button taps. This is where attention starts turning into business. If reach is growing but profile actions aren't, your content is entertaining but not leading anywhere.
5. Leads and sales from social
Use UTM links on every link you share so GA4 can show visits, form fills and purchases from each platform. Ask new customers how they found you. Track DMs that turn into inquiries. This is how you start to measure social media ROI.
6. Video retention
For Reels and TikTok, look at average watch time and how many people watched to the end. A strong hook and tight edit usually matter more than anything else. We covered this in how video content can grow your brand.
Metrics you can mostly ignore
- Follower count on its own. Growth is nice, but a small engaged audience that buys beats a large one that doesn't.
- Likes on their own. Easy to give, not much meaning.
- Impressions without context. Big numbers, little insight.
- Daily changes. Social data is noisy. Look at monthly trends.
A simple monthly social media report
Keep it to one page:
- Reach and change from last month
- Average engagement rate
- Top three posts by saves and shares, and why they worked
- Profile actions and website visits
- Leads or sales attributed to social
- Two things to try next month
That's enough to make decisions. If a report is ten pages long, nobody reads it.
Connecting social to the rest of your marketing
Social rarely works alone. People see a Reel, visit your profile, check your website, maybe search your name on Google a week later, then contact you. That's why a clean website and consistent brand matter just as much as the posts themselves.
Our social media marketing services include monthly social media reporting built around these numbers, plus content and video editing to keep your feed consistent.
