Website Redesign Checklist: Redesign Without Losing Rankings

A new website should bring more visitors and more leads. Sometimes it does the opposite. Traffic drops the week after launch, rankings disappear and nobody is quite sure why. Almost always, the cause is something that could have been checked beforehand. This website redesign checklist is the one we use.

Before you start

  • Set clear goals. More leads? Better mobile experience? Easier editing? Write them down so every decision can be checked against them.
  • Record your baseline. Export traffic, top pages, conversions and rankings from GA4 and Search Console. You'll need this to compare after launch.
  • Crawl the current site. Use a crawler to list every URL, title, description and status code.
  • List your best pages. Which pages bring the most organic traffic, backlinks and leads? These must be protected.

Content decisions

  • Go through every page and decide: keep, improve, merge or remove.
  • Don't delete pages that bring traffic just because they don't fit the new design. Improve them instead.
  • Keep the words that rank. Heavily cutting content from a ranking page is one of the fastest ways to lose it.
  • Plan new pages you need, like service pages that don't exist yet.

URL mapping and 301 redirects

This is the most important part of website redesign SEO.

  • Make a spreadsheet with every old URL in one column.
  • Next to each, write the new URL it should go to.
  • If a page is removed, redirect it to the closest relevant page, not the homepage.
  • Set up 301 redirects, not 302s, for permanent moves.
  • Avoid redirect chains (old to middle to new). Point directly to the final URL.

If you can keep the same URLs, even better. Fewer changes means less risk.

During the build

  • Build on a staging site that's blocked from Google with a password or noindex.
  • Carry over titles, meta descriptions and headings from ranking pages, then improve them.
  • Keep internal links pointing to the new URLs, not through redirects.
  • Add schema markup, image alt text and a proper heading structure.
  • Test speed. The new site should be faster than the old one.

Site launch checklist

  • Remove the noindex or password from the new site. This is missed more often than you'd think.
  • Check robots.txt isn't blocking important pages.
  • Put all 301 redirects live and test a sample of old URLs.
  • Submit the new XML sitemap in Search Console.
  • Check GA4, Google Ads conversions and any pixels are firing.
  • Test every form, phone link and WhatsApp button on mobile.
  • Check SSL and that http and www versions redirect correctly.

After launch

  • Watch Search Console daily for the first two weeks: coverage errors, 404s, drops in impressions.
  • Compare traffic and rankings with your baseline weekly for the first two months.
  • Fix any 404s that appear by adding redirects.
  • Expect some movement for a few weeks. A proper website migration usually settles within one to two months.

The most common mistakes

  1. Launching with noindex still on.
  2. No redirects, or everything redirected to the homepage.
  3. Deleting content that ranked.
  4. Changing URLs, content and domain all at once.
  5. Forgetting to reconnect analytics and conversion tracking.

Follow this list and you can redesign without losing traffic, and very often gain it. If you'd prefer a team to handle it, our website redesign services include the audit, redirect map and post-launch monitoring. For more on the technical side, see technical SEO.
