Local SEO Guide: How to Rank in Google Maps

Search for "dentist near me" or "best biryani" and look at what Google shows first. It's almost always a map with three businesses. Most people pick from those three and never scroll further. This guide explains how that map pack works and what you can do, step by step, to get your business into it.

How Google decides who shows in the map

Google says local results are based on three things: relevance (does your business match the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and trusted you are). You can't change distance. You can influence the other two a lot.

Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

This is the single most important local search ranking factor you control. If you haven't claimed your profile, do it today and complete verification.

  • Primary category: choose the most specific one that fits. "Cosmetic dentist" beats "dentist" if that's your focus.
  • Secondary categories: add the others that genuinely apply.
  • Services and products: list them with short descriptions.
  • Hours: keep them accurate, including holidays.
  • Photos: real photos of your place, team and work. Add new ones every month.
  • Description: plain words about what you do and where. No keyword stuffing.

Step 2: Get your NAP consistent everywhere

NAP means name, address and phone number. Google checks it across directories, social profiles and your website. If one listing says "Suite 4" and another says "Office 4B", or an old phone number is still out there, it weakens trust. Search your business name, list every place it appears and fix the differences. Boring work, but it matters.

Step 3: Build a steady flow of real reviews

Reviews affect both your ranking and whether people click. What helps most is a steady stream of recent, genuine reviews, not a burst of fifty in one week.

  • Ask at the right moment, when the customer is happiest.
  • Send a direct link to your review form by WhatsApp or email.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and quickly.
  • Never buy or write fake reviews. Google removes them and can suspend your profile.

If you want to get more Google reviews without being pushy, a small card at checkout or a message the day after the job works well.

Step 4: Make your website support your profile

Your profile links to your website, and Google reads both. Your site should have:

  • Your NAP in the footer, matching the profile exactly.
  • A proper page for each main service.
  • A page for each area you serve, with genuinely useful local content, not the same text with the city name swapped.
  • LocalBusiness schema markup.
  • A fast, mobile-friendly layout with a tap-to-call button.

Step 5: Earn local mentions and links

Prominence grows when other local sites talk about you. Sponsor a local event, join your chamber of commerce, get listed in genuine industry directories, and work with suppliers or partners who can link to you. A handful of relevant local links beats hundreds of random ones.

Step 6: Keep the profile active

Post updates, offers and new photos regularly. Answer questions in the Q&A section. Update hours for holidays. An active profile tells Google and customers you're open and paying attention.

What about near me searches?

You don't need to put "near me" on your website. Google already knows where the searcher is. Near me SEO is really about everything above: a strong profile, consistent listings, good reviews and clear location signals on your site.

How to track progress

Your Business Profile shows calls, direction requests and website clicks. Rank-tracking tools can show your position across a grid of points around your location, which is far more useful than one ranking number. Track leads, not just positions.
