A year or two ago, almost every search journey started with a list of blue links. Today a lot of them start with an answer. Google shows AI Overviews at the top of many results, and people use ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini to compare products, find agencies and research decisions. This has created a new question for business owners: how do we show up in those answers?
What is GEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It's the practice of making your content easy for AI systems to find, understand, trust and quote. You'll also hear it called answer engine optimization or AI SEO. The names differ, the idea is the same.
It's not a replacement for SEO. Most AI search tools pull from web pages that already rank or are well known. If Google can't crawl your site, AI tools usually can't use it either.
How AI tools choose what to cite
No one outside these companies knows the exact rules, and they change. But from testing and from what the platforms have said publicly, a few patterns are clear:
- Clear answers win. Pages that answer a question directly, near the top, get quoted more.
- Structure helps. Headings, lists, tables and FAQs are easier for a model to extract.
- Consistency builds trust. If your business details and claims match across your site, directories and reviews, you look more reliable.
- Specifics beat fluff. Real numbers, examples, prices and steps get cited. Vague marketing copy doesn't.
- Being mentioned elsewhere matters. Brands that appear in reviews, lists and articles on other sites show up more in LLM answers.
Practical steps you can take now
1. Get the SEO basics right
Make sure your pages are indexed, fast and technically clean. Check Search Console for errors. Without this, nothing else counts. Our SEO checklist covers the essentials.
2. Write answer-first content
For each important question your customers ask, write a clear one or two sentence answer, then explain in more depth. Look at your service pages: does each one say plainly what you do, who it's for, what it costs roughly and how long it takes? If not, that's your first job.
3. Add structured data
Organization, Service, FAQ, Product and Article schema give machines clean facts about your business. It doesn't guarantee anything, but it removes guesswork.
4. Clean up your brand information
Your name, services, location, founding year and contact details should be identical everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories. Inconsistent facts make it harder for an AI tool to be confident about you.
5. Publish things worth referencing
Original pricing guides, checklists, comparisons and small studies are the kind of content other sites and AI tools reference. A generic "10 tips" article rarely is.
6. Measure what you can
In GA4, create a segment for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar domains. Test your key buying questions in each tool every month and note who gets mentioned. It's manual, but it's honest data.
What to be careful of
Anyone promising guaranteed placement in ChatGPT or AI Overviews is overselling. These systems change often and don't publish ranking rules. The safest strategy is the one that also works for regular search: be genuinely useful, be clear and be consistent.
Does this mean less traffic?
For some informational searches, yes. When the answer appears in the overview, fewer people click. But for buying decisions, people still visit websites before they contact a business. Being cited in the answer means you're on the shortlist before the click even happens.
